NASA Data Suggest Future May Be Rainier Than Expected

A new study suggests that most global climate models may underestimate the amount of rain that will fall in Earth�s tropical regions as our planet continues to warm. Thats because these models underestimate decreases in high clouds over the tropics seen in recent NASA observations, according to research led by scientist Hui Su of NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Wait a minute: how can fewer clouds lead to more rainfall? Globally, rainfall isnt related just to the clouds that are available to make rain but also to Earths "energy budget" -- incoming energy from the sun compared to outgoing heat energy. High-altitude tropical clouds trap heat in the atmosphere. If there are fewer of these clouds in the future, the tropical atmosphere will cool. Judging from observed changes in clouds over recent decades, it appears that the atmosphere would create fewer high clouds in response to surface warming. It would also increase tropical rainfall, which would warm the air to balance the cooling from the high cloud shrinkage.

Rainfall warming the air also sounds counterintuitive -- people are used to rain cooling the air around them, not warming it. Several miles up in the atmosphere, however, a different process prevails. When water evaporates into water vapor here on Earths surface and rises into the atmosphere, it carries with it the heat energy that made it evaporate. In the cold upper atmosphere, when the water vapor condenses into liquid droplets or ice particles, it releases its heat and warms the atmosphere.

It puts the decrease in high tropical cloud cover in context as one result of a planet-wide shift in large-scale air flows that is occurring as Earths surface temperature warms. These large-scale flows are called the atmospheric general circulation, and they include a wide zone of rising air centered on the equator. Observations over the last 30 to 40 years have shown that this zone is narrowing as the climate warms, causing the decrease in high clouds.

Su and colleagues at JPL and four universities compared climate data from the past few decades with 23 climate model simulations of the same period. Climate modelers use retrospective simulations like these to check how well their numerical models are able to reproduce observations. For data, the team used observations of outgoing thermal radiation from NASAs spaceborne Clouds and the Earths Radiant Energy System (CERES) and other satellite instruments, as well as ground-level observations.

Sus team found that most of the climate models underestimated the rate of increase in precipitation for each degree of surface warming that has occurred in recent decades. The models that came closest to matching observations of clouds in the present-day climate showed a greater precipitation increase for the future than the other models.

Su said that by tracing the underestimation problem back to the models deficiencies in representing tropical high clouds and the atmospheric general circulation, "This study provides a pathway for improving predictions of future precipitation change.�

Salah satu permasalahan yang sering muncul dalam penggalian informasi itu adalah adanya missing value pada data. Hal ini dapat membuat tingkat keakuratan dari informasi yang didapat menjadi berkurang. Ada beberapa cara untuk mengatasi hal ini. Salah satunya adalah dengan melakukan pengisian terhadap missing value tersebut. Cara ini disebut proses imputasi.

Nilai k yang terbaik untuk algoritma ini tergantung pada data. Secara umum, nilai k yang tinggi akan mengurangi efek noise pada klasifikasi, tetapi membuat batasan antara setiap klasifikasi menjadi semakin kabur. Nilai k yang bagus dapat dipilih dengan optimasi parameter, misalnya dengan menggunakan cross-validation. Kasus khusus dimana klasifikasi diprediksikan berdasarkan training data yang paling dekat (dengan kata lain, k = 1) disebut algoritma nearest neighbor.

Hal ini dikarenakan k-nearest neighbour classifier mengukur jarak spektral setiap pixel ke semua pixel yang ada dalam daerah sampel. Waktu proses klasifikasi akan semakin lama seiring semakin banyaknya jumlah saluran, bertambah besarnya ukuran daerah sampel dan bertambahnya jumlah kelas yang akan diklasikasikan.

Dimensi citra yang ditentukan adalah 500x500 pixel, 1.000x1.000 pixel, dan 2.000x2.000 pixel (dengan jumlah saluran tetap sama). Jumlah kelas tutupan lahan (landcover) yang diklasikasikan juga dibuat bervariasi, yaitu 5 kelas, 10 kelas dan 15 kelas tutupan lahan. Pembuatan daerah sampel (training area) untuk klasifikasi dan untuk uji akurasi hasil klasifikasi dilakukan berdasarkan data hasil survey lapangan (ground check). Uji akurasi hasil klasikasi dilakukan menggunakan metode Confusion Matrix, dan uji esiensi (lamanya waktu proses klasikasi) dinyatakan dalam satuan detik.

13. Holdout Method

Dalam metode ini data dibagi menjadi dua kelompok data independen, yaitu data pelatihan dan data pengujian, secara acak. Secara khusus dua pertiga dari data dialokasikan dalam kelompok data pelatihan, dan sepertiga sisanya ke dalam kelompok data pengujian. Data pelatihan digunakan untuk memperoleh model, dan akurasinya diestimasi menggunakan data pengujian. Estimasinya bersifat pesimis karena hanya sebagian dari data awal yang digunakan untuk memperoleh model.

14. Random Subsampling

Adalah variasi dari metode Holdout. Metode ini adalah metode Holdout yang diulang sebanyak k kali Estimasi akurasi keseluruhan diambil dari rata-rata pada akurasi yang sering terjadi setiap iterasi. Contohnya adalah, mengambil rata-rata dari tingkat kesalahan prediksi.

K-Fold cross validation adalah salah satu cara untuk meningkatkan atas metode ketidaksepakatan. Kumpulan data dibagi menjadi subset k, dan metode holdout diulang sebanyak k kali. Setiap kali, salah satu himpunan bagian k digunakan sebagai test set dan k-1 subset lainnya diletakkan bersama-sama untuk membentuk satu set pelatihan. Kemudian kesalahan rata-rata di semua percobaan k dihitung.

Keuntungan dari metode ini adalah kurang pentingnya bagaimana data akan dibagi. Setiap titik data akan berada dalam tes set tepat satu kali, dan akan berada dalam pelatihan set k-1 kali. Varians dari estimasi yang dihasilkan berkurang karena k meningkat.

Kerugian dari metode ini adalah bahwa algoritma pelatihan harus diulang kembali dari awal k kali, yang berarti dibutuhkan waktu k sebagai perhitungan banyak untuk membuat evaluasi.

Sebuah varian dari metode ini adalah untuk secara acak membagi data ke dalam tes dan training set k waktu yang berbeda.

16. Bootstrapping

bootstrapping adalah suatu metode untuk menderivasikan estimasi yang kuat dari error standar dan interval kepercayaan untuk mengestimasi proporsi, rerata, median, odds ratio, koefisien korelasi atau koefisien regresi. bootstrapping juga dapat digunakan untuk mengembangkan uji hipotesis. bootstrapping sangat berguna sebagai alternatif untuk estimasi parameter ketika peneliti merasa ragu dapat memenuhi asumsu pada data mereka.

17. Confusion Matrix adalah sebuah tabel yang terdiri atas banyaknya baris data uji yang diprediksi benar dan tidak benar oleh model klasifikasi, tabel ini diperlukan untuk menentukan kinerja suatu model klasifikasi.

19. Specificity adalah ukuran tingkatan derajat classifier dapat mengenal negatives samples ("no") berdasarkan true negatives yang dapat diprediksi secara benar jika yang diberikan adalah sample negatives.

adalah perbandingan jumlah dokumen relevan yang didapatkan sistem dengan jumlah seluruh dokumen yang terambil oleh sistem baik relevan maupun tidak relevan.

Dalam data mining,recall adalah permasalahan klasifikasi perhitungan kinerja,pengambilan data yang berhasil dilakukan terhadap bagian data yang relevan dengan query.Dalam klasifikasi binari, recall disebut juga dengan sensitivity. Peluang munculnya data relevan yang diambil sesuai dengan query dapat dilihat dengan recall, sebagian kecil dari dokumen yang relevan dengan query yang berhasil diambil.

Sensitivitas dan spesifisitas adalah ukuran statistik kinerja tes klasifikasi biner, juga dikenal dalam statistik sebagai fungsi klasifikasi. Dengan penerapan metode ini maka hasil klasifikasi ataupun prediksi terhadap data akan semakin akurat.
