The Reason Why Video Entertainment is The Only Service To Increase Prices

The Reason Why Video Entertainment is The Only Service To Increase Prices

Over the past several decades, it would have been a reasonable question to ask why entertainment video service prices grew faster than inflation, while retail prices for communications services (voice, texting, Internet access) declined, either on a price-per-unit basis or in terms of absolute price per unit.

The answer is simple: entertainment video is about the purchase of content, not access to content.

Compared to voice, texting or Internet access, entertainment video is more akin to fashion than a utility service. And that means retail price is not a direct function of production cost.

That is clear in the latest Federal Communications Commission report on content prices in the U.S. linear video market.

However, given diminished consumer appetite for the traditional big content bundles and a shift to over-the-top or on-demand viewing, it will be necessary for most, if not all, providers to just say no to content providers and restrict the size of bundles.

That is going to shift the way content gets to market, with increasing amounts of programming moving through new services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.

According to a new FCC report, the average monthly price of expanded basic service (the combined price of basic service and the most subscribed cable programming tier excluding taxes, fees, and customer premises equipment charges) for the communities surveyed grew by 2.7 percent over the 12 months ending January 1, 2015, to $69.03, compared to a decrease of 0.1 percent in the consumer price index.

That is to say, linear video prices rose by an order of magnitude more than the overall level of consumer prices.

This compares to a compound ten-year average rate of increase from 2005 to 2015 of 4.8 percent in the price of expanded basic and a 1.5 percent increase in the CPI.

To be sure, linear video providers have argued in the past that prices are up in large part because the number of channels offered in bundles has grown.

The price per channel (price divided by number of channels) for subscribers purchasing expanded basic service decreased by 1.8 percent over the 12 months ending January 1, 2015, to 46 cents per channel.

Over the 10 years from 2005-2015, the price per channel has declined by 1.4 percent on an average annual compound basis.

In the past, consumers might not have had as much choice. In the future, they will. Prices are going to come down. Still, the issue is whether entertainment video might still outperform voice, texting or Internet access, in some cases, in terms of absolute revenue contribution, price per unit or profit margin.

Xperia Z5 smartphone worth buying only if you are a Sony fan

Xperia Z5 smartphone worth buying only if you are a Sony fan

The Xperia Z5 Dual is Sonys attempt to make a premium smartphone on the cheap. To that end, it falls flat. Upgrades like a beefed-up camera and a fingerprint scanner cant disguise the limitations of whats supposed to be a flagship device.
And when that device comes with a Dh2,699 price tag, thats a real problem.
The Z5s design is virtually identical to that of its predecessor (in the Middle East at least) the Z3+. Thats a problem, given that the Z3+s design was virtually identical to the Z3, which in turn offered only minor updates to the now 18-month-old Z2.

Even worse, the Z5 retains the uneven joins of the Z3+, its sharp edges giving its design a distinctly mid-range feel.
Also unchanged is the 5.2- inch full HD display, which is also starting to show its age in comparison with the likes of the iPhone 6S and Galaxy S6 range, but also with far cheaper competitors like the Huawei P8.
Those looking for a better viewing experience are advised to turn their attention to the 4K display of the Z5 Premium, retailing for Dh300 more.

One welcome innovation over the Z3+ is that the power button on the right-hand side of the phone now doubles as a fingerprint reader, allowing for easy unlocking of the handset without entering a PIN or swipe code.
The other major upgrade is the camera, with the Z5 offering a 23 MP rear camera, while retaining the 5.1 MP selfie snapper.
While the Z5 captures images with plenty of detail and nice bright colours, they arent significantly different to those taken with other devices to make the camera a key selling feature.

At the end of the day, the Z5 is only worth buying if, for some reason, Sonys handset designs still appeal to you. Despite the camera upgrade, it doesnt have the design or specifications to compete with the likes of Samsung and Apple, and at Dh2,699 its a far more expensive offering than excellent alternatives from Huawei and LG. For fans only.
        q&a no more underwater selfies
John Everington expands on Sonys new Xperia Z5 Dual:

I was just getting used to the Z3+. What about the Z4? Im confused.
It is a bit complicated. The Z3+ was indeed the last handset launched here in the UAE, but the same device was branded as the Z4 in Japan. Perhaps the Z5 will bring things back together again, or perhaps Sonys next flagship will take a leaf out of Microsofts book and be called the Z8. Well keep you posted.
Back to the Z5. What happens if I want a smaller phone or a sharper display?

Well, youre in luck. In addition to the Z5 Dual, theres also the Z5 Compact, which sports a 4.6-inch display and is available now for Dh2,299. More intriguing perhaps is the Z5 Premium, the first smartphone in the world with a 4K display, which will go on sale this month for Dh2,899.
Can I still use the Z5 to take underwater selfies?
Unfortunately not. After touting the Xperias underwater capabilities for ages, Sony has performed a volte face, and now recommends not using the camera in the pool. Its apparently still waterproof enough to survive having a cup of coffee spilt on it, though I thought it best not to test this.

              And how about battery life?
Sony reckons you can get two days of use off a single charge. While this is a tad optimistic, it gets through an entire day of standard usage comfortably enough.
