Is there a competition law issue lurking on the horizon of cloud computing

Is there a competition law issue lurking on the horizon of cloud computing

Are we on the cusp of a potential competition law problem in the area of cloud computing services? The Economist tantalizingly, in an article entitled Cloud Chronicles, which appeared in its August 27th issue, has described the present circumstances of the industry, and why there might be room for future competition law concern. The culprit, if it comes to pass, may well be Amazon Web Services (usually referred to as AWS), which is the cloud-computing part of amazon, com. The story goes like this.

In 2006, Amazon made available a beta version of a service called Elastic Compute Cloud, described as
the central offering of AWS. The service took off, in part, according to the article, because it coincided with the rise of the smartphone and the supporting app industry. Developers loved the opportunity to forego maintaining a hardware system and paying a fixed fee for use of software, in favor of paying only for the capacity that they used. AWS is said to have engaged in many rounds of price reductions, enabling it to capture increased market share. As well, AWS has, and continues to offer, an increasing number of add-on services, the marginal cost for which is minimal since the software has already been developed.

As such, AWS early on enjoyed first mover advantage (being the first cloud computing service to succeed on a large scale) and continues to benefit from network effects. As well, the burden of switching costs served to make it more likely that a user will be reluctant to move to another cloud service. Based on these advantages, AWS has raced far ahead of its competition. It is three times larger than its nearest competitorMicrosoft Azure. Other potential competitors are even less visible, including competing offerings from IBM and Google. At least these two hi-tech behemoths are still in the game; Hewlett-Packard has apparently simply withdrawn from the field. Even Salesforce.com, which is a prominent provider of on-line applications, announced that it will begin to make use of AWS services.

What will slow AWSs continued dominant position in the industry? The article suggests that users are aggressive in trying to avoid being locked-in to AWS as their sole cloud services provider. It further reports that, at least in Europe, two-fifths of the companies in the cloud use more than one cloud service. Also, while the AWS service is highly popular with start-up developers, it has less success in attracting larger, established companies, in part, it would seem, from a hesitation by such companies to be tied up with a potential competitor, given the ever-increasing nature of Amazons product and service offerings. These countervailing forces argue that there may be a limit as to how much more AWS can grow.

Still, based on the information in the article, AWS does seem to enjoy a dominant position with smaller developers. If this were to be found to be the relevant population for vetting competition law concerns, then attention to pricing (should prices begin to tick upwards) and the ease or difficulty of switching to another cloud service, bears watch, especially since the computing infrastructure required might serve as a potential barrier to entry for competitors. Or perhaps less conventional metrics will be brought to bear. The article itself does not go into a discussion of how anti-competitive behavior by AWS might look, stating merely that
AWS could end up dominating the IT industry just as IBMs System/360, a family of mainframe computers, did until the 1980s. If that happens, the antitrust authorities may eventually have to step in, as they did with IBM.
This in itself is an interesting comment. This Kat is hoary enough to remember the antitrust case against IBM, filed in 1969, which dragged on until 1982. There, the issue was IBMs alleged anti-competitive conduct based on its alleged dominance of the mainframe computer industry. What is notable is that this decade-long lawsuit came to an end because the US Depart of Justice ultimately decided to dismiss the case. Developments in the computer world had moved on since the filing of the law suit in the late 1960s, and the capacity of IBM to dominate the computer world had passed.

read also: How to Unlock LG Optimus F6 Metro PCS Pattern/Security Code Free
Even more, this Kat remembers the frequently made comment that antitrust suits such as the IBM case, especially in the technology area, are almost always late to the game: either the technology is passing the target industry by, or the law suit is a cue to the target to seek new products and markets. If this be true, then it raises an interesting question: what would the filing of such a law suit say about the cloud-computing industry? Is the pace of innovation so seriously stuck in neutral, and the nature of cloud-computing so very different from the world of IBMs System/ 360 family of mainframe computers, that there might be greater justification in considering such a law suit, should there be prima facie indicia of anti-competitive behavior? Or will such a suit be a redux of the IBM litigation? Stay tuned (especially if your computing connectivity is from the cloud).

Is Android 8 0 O public roll out nearing Google Pixel devices may get it first

Is Android 8 0 O public roll out nearing Google Pixel devices may get it first

Is Android 8.0 O public roll out nearing? Google Pixel devices may get it first
Top 7 biggest features of Android O
It is obvious that Google will roll out its recently announced operating system Android 8.0 O (yet to get a name) one of these days but nobody knows the exact date. The only wild guess so far is that the OS could be released in the first half of August, and it has emerged that it could happen next week.
The search giant has already released Developer Preview 4 of Android 8.0 O ahead of the public roll out.
"This is the final preview before we launch the official Android O platform to consumers later this summer. Take this opportunity to wrap up your testing and publish your updates soon, to give users a smooth transition to Android O," said Google on Android Developers Blog.
Now, tech pundit David Ruddock has claimed in a tweet that the firmware update could come in a weeks time.
However, Google is yet to officially announce the release date of its latest OS.
When will your smartphone receive Android 8.0 O update?
It is almost certain that the Google Pixel and its bigger sibling Pixel XL will get the Android 8.0 O update first, as that the search giant has the tradition of seeding its new OS to its flagships before expanding to other devices and OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). The handsets that could be line to taste the firmware include the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Pixel C and Nexus Player.
OnePlus has confirmed that it would seed the latest firmware to its OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 5, and HMD Global too has announced that its new smartphones Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6 would get the OS. However, it is not known when these devices will get the new firmware.
Other OEMs, including Samsung to Lenovo (Motorola), LG, Sony HTC, Sony, Blackberry, Lenovo (Motorola), Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, OPPO and others will surely make the new firmware available to their popular handsets, especially the flagships but they have chosen to keep mum.

The Reason Why Video Entertainment is The Only Service To Increase Prices

The Reason Why Video Entertainment is The Only Service To Increase Prices

Over the past several decades, it would have been a reasonable question to ask why entertainment video service prices grew faster than inflation, while retail prices for communications services (voice, texting, Internet access) declined, either on a price-per-unit basis or in terms of absolute price per unit.

The answer is simple: entertainment video is about the purchase of content, not access to content.

Compared to voice, texting or Internet access, entertainment video is more akin to fashion than a utility service. And that means retail price is not a direct function of production cost.

That is clear in the latest Federal Communications Commission report on content prices in the U.S. linear video market.

However, given diminished consumer appetite for the traditional big content bundles and a shift to over-the-top or on-demand viewing, it will be necessary for most, if not all, providers to just say no to content providers and restrict the size of bundles.

That is going to shift the way content gets to market, with increasing amounts of programming moving through new services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.

According to a new FCC report, the average monthly price of expanded basic service (the combined price of basic service and the most subscribed cable programming tier excluding taxes, fees, and customer premises equipment charges) for the communities surveyed grew by 2.7 percent over the 12 months ending January 1, 2015, to $69.03, compared to a decrease of 0.1 percent in the consumer price index.

That is to say, linear video prices rose by an order of magnitude more than the overall level of consumer prices.

This compares to a compound ten-year average rate of increase from 2005 to 2015 of 4.8 percent in the price of expanded basic and a 1.5 percent increase in the CPI.

To be sure, linear video providers have argued in the past that prices are up in large part because the number of channels offered in bundles has grown.

The price per channel (price divided by number of channels) for subscribers purchasing expanded basic service decreased by 1.8 percent over the 12 months ending January 1, 2015, to 46 cents per channel.

Over the 10 years from 2005-2015, the price per channel has declined by 1.4 percent on an average annual compound basis.

In the past, consumers might not have had as much choice. In the future, they will. Prices are going to come down. Still, the issue is whether entertainment video might still outperform voice, texting or Internet access, in some cases, in terms of absolute revenue contribution, price per unit or profit margin.

Nokia Bubbles Experimental project is terminated

Nokia Bubbles Experimental project is terminated

When a project comes up with the status of the experimental site from Nokia Beta Labs, this is a test concept. Thus, the application can have a happy ending and end up as a business solution, as was the case of Nokia Screen Sleeping or be canceled if it is identified a serious flaw. Nokia Bubbles outcome was to the latter. The information was published today on the blog from Nokia Beta Labs.

The application from the beginning showed a very innovative, presented a series of problems related to memory consumption and incompatibility with some versions of QT.
Such problems were not a solution and thus Nokia has decided to suspend the project. In practice the results obtained from this project can and may be used in a future solution that will replace the Nokia Bubbles.
If you have the application and are not having any problem with the behavior of your device, I suggest leaving as is. Now in case youre any kind of abnormal behavior and instabilities, travementos, resets, and so memory is full. It is better to remove the bubbles, since it can be the cause of their problems.

How Batik Is Made

How Batik Is Made

Hi, Sup! ^_^

I wanna write something about my country culture, Indonesia. Yes, batik. Who doesnt know Batik? I bet no one doesnt know because it was officially recognized as belonging to Indonesia by UNESCO. Here Ill write step by step how to make Batik. I learnt all of the technique from Batik Belimbing. Actually I never know this place, but my friends told me because I am asking how to make Batik for Prakarya project.  I never felt horrible in there because the place and the teacher are very nice to us. Btw, I came there with Nadia, Fitri, Maghfira, Salsa, Wishnu when we was TO 3 day ! Because the deadline forced us to do it ASAP xD

What is the most different Batik with the other fabric? Shortly, in the making, Batik using wax.

HOW TO MAKE BATIK
  1.  Molani

Molani means draw or tracing  the design with pencil

       2. Mencanting

Mencanting means trace the design that you drew with pencil with canting that contains hot liquid wax.
When you hand the canting you should mencanting it with gently, take the liquid wax not too much or it wont block entire of the mori( the fabric) so it will blend with other color in the next step.

     3. Nyolet

Nyolet means coloring inside of design.
You shouldnt coloring outside of the line. In this case, we use

     4. Dry the fabric
Never dry it below sunlight, just dry it by wind

     5. Nembok

Nembok means block inside of the design, because we wanna coloring the outside of the design so it the color wont blend

     6.  Dye it in TRO salt

We use TRO salt in order to expand the fabric pore

       7. Color the fabric

In this case, I was use napthol and indigosol.

        8. Nglorod

Soak it with boiling water, so the wax will fall out

      9. Dry it ! TADA DONEEE

Thats it how to make Batik.
If you are interesting to make Batik with less money you can go to here or this site.

For All Networks Fiber to Where You Can Make Money is the Issue

For All Networks Fiber to Where You Can Make Money is the Issue

"Fiber to where you can make money" is a good way to evaluate various fixed network access methods. For cable TV operators, the issue is fiber deep into the neighborhood. For some telcos, that is the same issue.

For some telcos, fiber to the premises is the choice, but the issue of revenue generated by such networks remains.
fiber optic

For fixed wireless networks, the issue is fiber to tower or building. For mobile operators, the issue is fiber to the macrocell or fiber to the small cell.

In other words, the issue is not the choice of physical media, or the topology, but the revenue that any given deployment can generate. And, at a time when voice revenues are declining, and where facilities-based competition exists, the financial returns from fiber to the home often are questionable.

The choices are even more difficult for any telco operating in a market where cable TV firms are active, serious competitors. Stranded assets then are the real issue, as up to 60 percent of deployed assets can routinely be stranded (assuming cable TV gets 40 percent to 45 percent share, the telco gets 40 percent share, while other suppliers get 15 percent to 20 percent market share.

In other words, the issue is to deploy fiber to where you make money. That is true for all fixed network suppliers, including cable TV firms using hybrid fiber coax technology.

Assuming fiber is deployed rather deep into the network, coaxial cable can carry huge amounts of bandwidth.

O MG the Developer Preview of Android O is here!

O MG the Developer Preview of Android O is here!

Posted by Dave Burke, VP of Engineering

Since the first launch in 2008, the Android project has thrived on the
incredible feedback from our vibrant ecosystems of app developers and device
makers, as well as of course our users. More recently, weve been pushing hard
on improving our engineering processes so we can share our work earlier and more
openly with our partners.

So, today, Im excited to share a first href="http://developer.android.com/preview">developer preview of the next
version of the OS: Android O. The usual caveats apply: its early days, there
are more features coming, and theres still plenty of stabilization and
performance work ahead of us. But its booting :).

Over the course of the next several months, well be releasing updated developer
previews, and well be doing a deep dive on all things Android at href="https://events.google.com/io/">Google I/O in May. In the meantime,
wed love your feedback on trying out new features, and of course testing your
apps on the new OS.

Whats new in O?

Android O introduces a number of new features and APIs to use in your apps.
Heres are just a few new things for you to start trying in this
first Developer Preview:

Background limits: Building on the work we began in Nougat,
Android O puts a big priority on improving a users battery life and the
devices interactive performance. To make this possible, weve put additional
automatic limits on what apps can do in the background, in three main areas:
implicit broadcasts, background services, and location updates. These changes
will make it easier to create apps that have minimal impact on a users device
and battery. Background limits represent a significant change in Android, so we
want every developer to get familiar with them. Check out the documentation on
href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/background.html">background
execution limits
and href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/background-location-limits.html">background
location limits
for details.

Notification channels: Android O also introduces href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/notification-channels.html">notification
channels
, which are new app-defined categories for notification content.
Channels let developers give users fine-grained control over different kinds of
notifications — users can block or change the behavior of each channel
individually, rather than managing all of the apps notifications together.

Notification channels let users control your apps notification categories

Android O also adds new visuals and grouping to notifications that make it
easier for users to see whats going on when they have an incoming message or
are glancing at the notification shade.

Autofill APIs: Android users already depend on a range of
password managers to autofill login details and repetitive information, which
makes setting up new apps or placing transactions easier. Now we are making this
work more easily across the ecosystem by adding platform support for autofill.
Users can select an autofill app, similar to the way they select a keyboard app.
The autofill app stores and secures user data, such as addresses, user names,
and even passwords. For apps that want to handle autofill, were href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/autofill.html">adding
new APIs
to implement an Autofill service.

PIP for handsets and new windowing features: href="https://developer.android.com/preview/api-overview.html#opip">Picture
in Picture (PIP)
display is now available on phones and tablets, so users
can continue watching a video while theyre answering a chat or hailing a car.
Apps can put themselves in PiP mode from the resumed or a pausing state where
the system supports it - and you can specify the aspect ratio and a set of
custom interactions (such as play/pause). Other new windowing features include a
href="https://developer.android.com/preview/behavior-changes.html?#cwt">new
app overlay window
for apps to use instead of system alert window, and href="https://developer.android.com/preview/api-overview.html#mds">multi-display
support
for launching an activity on a remote display.

Font resources in XML: href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/working-with-fonts.html">Fonts
are now a fully supported resource type in Android O. Apps can now use fonts in
XML layouts as well as define font families in XML — declaring the font style
and weight along with the font files.

Adaptive icons: To help you integrate better with the device
UI, you can now create href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/adaptive-icons.html">
adaptive icons
that the system displays in different shapes, based on a mask
selected by the device. The system also animates interactions with the icons,
and uses them in the launcher, shortcuts, Settings, sharing dialogs, and in the
overview screen.

Adaptive icons display in a variety of shapes across different device models.

Wide-gamut color for apps: Android developers of imaging apps
can now take advantage of new devices that have a wide-gamut color capable
display. To display wide gamut images, apps will need to enable a flag in their
manifest (per activity) and load bitmaps with an embedded wide color profile
(AdobeRGB, Pro Photo RGB, DCI-P3, etc.).

Connectivity: For the ultimate in audio fidelity, Android O now
also supports high-quality Bluetooth audio codecs such as href="https://www.sony.net/Products/LDAC/">LDAC codec. Were also adding new Wi-Fi features as well, like
Wi-Fi
Aware
, previously known as Neighbor Awareness Networking (NAN). On devices with
the appropriate hardware, apps and nearby devices can discover and communicate
over Wi-Fi without an Internet access point. Were working with our hardware
partners to bring Wi-Fi Aware technology to devices as soon as possible.

The Telecom framework is extending ConnectionService APIs to enable third party
calling apps integrate with System UI and operate seamlessly with other audio apps.
For instance, apps can have their calls displayed and controlled in different kinds
of UIs such as car head units.

Keyboard navigation: With the advent of Google Play apps on Chrome
OS and other large form factors, were seeing a resurgence of keyboard
navigation use within these apps. In Android O we focused on building a more
reliable, predictable model for "arrow" and "tab" navigation that aids both
developers and end users.

AAudio API for Pro Audio: AAudio is a new native API thats
designed specifically for apps that require high-performance, low-latency audio.
Apps using AAudio read and write data via streams. In the Developer Preview
were releasing an early version of this new API to get your feedback.

WebView enhancements: In Android Nougat we introduced an
optional multiprocess mode for WebView that moved the handling of web content
into an isolated process. In Android O, were enabling multiprocess mode by
default and adding an href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/managing-webview.html">API
to let your app handle errors and crashes
, for enhanced security and
improved app stability. As a further security measure, you can now opt in your
apps WebView objects to href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/managing-webview.html#gsb">verify
URLs through Google Safe Browsing
.

Java 8 Language APIs and runtime optimizations: Android now supports
several new Java Language APIs, including the new java.time API. In addition,
the Android Runtime is faster than ever before, with improvements of up to 2x on
some application benchmarks.

Partner platform contributions: Hardware manufacturers and
silicon partners have accelerated fixes and enhancements to the Android platform
in the O release. For example, Sony has contributed more than 30 feature
enhancements including the href="https://www.sony.net/Products/LDAC/">LDAC codec and 250 bug fixes to Android O.

Get started in a few simple steps

First, make your app compatible to give your users a seamless
transition to Android O. Just download a href="https://developer.android.com/preview/download.html">device
system image
or emulator system image, install your current app, and test --
the app should run and look great, and handle href="https://developer.android.com/preview/behavior-changes.html">behavior
changes
properly. After youve made any necessary updates, we recommend
publishing to Google Play right away without changing the apps platform
targeting.

Building with Android O

When youre ready, dive in to O in depth to learn about
everything you can take advantage of for your app. Visit the href="https://developer.android.com/preview/index.html">O Developer
Preview site
for details on the href="https://developer.android.com/preview/overview.html">preview
timeline
, href="https://developer.android.com/preview/behavior-changes.html">behavior
changes
, href="https://developer.android.com/preview/api-overview.html">new
APIs
, and href="https://developer.android.com/preview/feedback.html">support
resources
.

Plan how your app will support href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/background.html">background
limits
and href="https://developer.android.com/preview/behavior-changes.html#o-apps">other
changes
. Try out some of the great new features in your app -- href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/notification-channels.html">notification
channels
, href="https://developer.android.com/preview/api-overview.html#opip">PIP,
href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/adaptive-icons.html">adaptive

resources in XML
, href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/autosizing-textview.html">autosizing
TextView
, and href="https://developer.android.com/preview/api-overview.html">many
others
. To make it easier to explore the new APIs in Android O, weve
brought the href="https://developer.android.com/sdk/api_diff/o-dp1/changes.html">API
diff report
online, along with the href="https://developer.android.com/reference/packages.html">Android
O API reference
.

The latest canary version of href="https://developer.android.com/studio/preview/">Android Studio 2.4
includes new features to help you get started with Android O. You can download
and set up the O preview SDK from inside Android Studio, then use Android Os href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/working-with-fonts.html">XML
font resources
and href="https://developer.android.com/preview/features/autosizing-textview.html">autosizing
TextView
in the Layout Editor. Watch for more Android O support coming in
the weeks ahead.

Were also releasing an href="https://developer.android.com/topic/libraries/support-library/revisions.html">alpha
version of the 26.0.0 support library
for you to try. This version adds a number of new APIs and increases the minSdkversion to 14. Check out the release notes for details.

Preview updates

The O Developer Preview includes an updated SDK with system images for testing
on the official Android Emulator and on Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Pixel,
Pixel XL and Pixel C devices. If youre building for wearables, theres also an
emulator for testing Android Wear 2.0 on Android O.

We plan to update the preview system images and SDK regularly throughout the O
Developer Preview. This initial preview release is for developers
only
and not intended for daily or consumer use, so were making it
available by manual download and flash only. href="https://developer.android.com/preview/download.html">Downloads
and instructions are here
.

As we get closer to a final product, well be inviting consumers to try it out as
well, and well open up enrollments through Android Beta at that time. Stay
tuned for details, but for now please note that Android Beta is not
currently available for Android O
.

Give us your feedback

As always, your feedback is crucial, so please href="https://developer.android.com/preview/feedback.html">let us
know what you think
— the sooner we hear from you, the more of your
feedback we can integrate. When you find issues, please href="https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/new?component=190602&template=809005">report them
here
. Weve moved to a more robust tool, href="https://issuetracker.google.com">Issue Tracker, which is also used
internally at Google to track bugs and feature requests during product
development. We hope youll find it href="https://developers.google.com/issue-tracker/">easier to
use
.

When is a Terabyte Household Data Consumption Limit a Problem

When is a Terabyte Household Data Consumption Limit a Problem

When is a terrabyte of usage on a single consumer Internet access account a problem? When a consumer user is part of the one percent. That is one percent in terms of data consumption on a Comcast network in a months time.

Roughly, that corresponds (Comcasts estimates) to a household consuming about 21.7 hours of high-definition format video entertainment every day of the month, based on a terabyte supporting between 600 and 700 hours of HD video, and using 650 as the median case.

Netflix estimates an hour of its HD video consumes about 3 GB per hour, though. In 2014, according to Sandvine, a cord cutter household consumed about 212 GB a month (video and all other uses).

As a rule of thumb, a typical household using Netflix and streaming video should not experience any data consumption limit issues if a 500-gbyte cap is in place, according to WhistleOut.
